Indian PM to discuss participation in CHOGM in Sri Lanka

India Prime Minister Manmohan Singh will hold discussions with the External Affairs Minister Salman Khurshid to make a decision on India’s participation in the Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting (CHOGM) to be held in Colombo this November.India’s union minister, Minister of State in Prime Minister’s Office (PMO) V. Narayanasamy on Saturday said the Prime Minister will take a final call on boycotting CHOGM after holding discussions with External Affairs Minister Salman Khurshid.Leaders of main Tamil political parties in Tamil Nadu M. Karunanidhi of DMK and Jayalalithaa of AIDMK have asked the Prime Minister to boycott CHOGM in Sri Lanka over the Sri Lankan Tamils issue.The Union Minister of Shipping G.K. Vasan also joined the Tamil party leaders and said Friday that India should ask the Commonwealth to shift the venue from Sri Lanka if there is no change in Lanka’s approach towards ethnic Tamils.”As far as the Government of India is concerned, there is still time. The Prime Minister will discuss the issue with the Foreign Affairs Minister and (then) the Prime Minister will take a final decision on that,” Narayanasamy was quoted in Indian media as saying.Narayanasamy said his personal opinion is that the countries voted in favor of the US resolution against Sri Lanka should jointly make efforts to shift the venue of the CHOGM to some other country if there is no change in Sri Lanka’s approach towards ethnic Tamils.He further said the Prime Minister should attend the meeting on the basis of the collective decision.
