Soon, Sri Lanka Podujana Perumuna to set feet in the Jaffna district. Basil Rajapaksa, former minister and one of the leaders of the Party said that the party would establish direct contact with the people in the region. “No more brokers,” he emphasized.
A group of EX EPDP members from Jaffna district met with the former minister Basil Rajapaksa, the joint Party head, on 5th September, at the Party head office at Jayanthi Pura, Nelum Mawatha, Battaramull and discussed matters related to organizing the Party and opening up of the Party office in Jaffna.
The Sri Lanka Podujana Perumuna ( SLPP) was formed last year on November 2, under the leadership of Prof. G.L. Peiris as an alternative political factor to SLFP.
In English language, the Party is known as Sri Lanka Peoples Front and the Tamil language version of the Party’s name yet to be officially announced.
It is learnt that many of those EPDP and SLFP mebers in the North who worked for the former President Mahinda Rajapaksa in the last Presidential election are no more with the SLFP and are no more active in politics, as they were being ignored and not recognized by the present powers of the government in North, representing President Maithripala Srisena.
As the former SLFPers were not given proper recognition and been misled by powers outside the North, and a group of Tamils to be exact 62 former political activists from Jaffna, on the invitation of the Party, went and met former minister Basil Rajapaksa to discuss organizing Sri Lanka Podujana Perumuna as a viable alternative to SLFP.
At the preliminary meeting held at the Party office ,that Party wanted to have direct link with the Tamils in the North and East and not to go through Agents and brokers like EPDP as was done earlier.
Also Basil Rajapaksa has told all those who met him that he intend to set up a committee of Tamil political intellectuals to work out a common policy for the party embracing the Tamils and to find solutions to issues confronting them.
At the meeting, Thambithurai Rajeevan formerly coordinator of Maheswary Foundation under the EPDP was made the Party coordinator for the Jaffna district.
Also S.Sivarajah alias Paul , formerly Chairman of the Velanai Pradesha Saba, P. Theiventhiran, former opposition leader of the Valvetiturai Urban Council, Former leader of the Northern Provincial Council K. Kamalendran, former Vali North Pradesha Sabah Chairman Thiruloganathan and others participated in the discussion held at the Party headquarters in Colombo.
It is learnt that the selected Party Representatives of Jaffna district are expected to meet Basil Rajapaksa one more time in Colombo for a final discussion on opening up of the Party office in Jaffna.
As they have already selected an office premises in the Point Pedro – Jaffna road which earlier functioned as the SLFP office during Mahinda Rajapaksa leadership days and Basil Rajapaksa is expected visit Jaffna on the 16th of this month to declare open the Jaffna district branch office of the Sri Lanka Podujana Perumuna.
