The People’s Action for Free and Fair Elections says all independent election monitoring bodies are scheduled to hold a discussion with Chairman of the Elections Commission Mahinda Deshapriya tomorrow.
Executive Director of PAFFREL Rohana Hettiarachchi said attention will be directed to the possibility of holding the Local Government Election.
NewsRadio inquired if there could be a delay in the election due to the decision taken by the Ministry of Local Government and Provincial Councils pertaining to the Nuwara Eliya and Ambagamuwa Pradeshiya Sabha.
In response, PAFFREL’s Rohana Hettiarachchi said taking into consideration the population and demography of the Ambagamuwa and Nuwara-Eliya Pradeshiya Sabha, there is a need to introduce several more Local Government bodies.
Hettiarachchi said the move will not hinder the conduct of the election.
He added the Ministry can arrive at a decision to ensure divisional demarcation and establish new Local Government bodies with the timeframe at hand.
Executive Director Hettiarachchi said the Elections Commission can arrive at a decision to refrain from declaring an election for the Nuwara-Eliya and Ambagamuwa Pradeshiya Sabha until a decision is reached on demarcation
