The Disaster Management Centre (DMC) says over 1,700 residents of the Jaffna District have been evacuated to safe locations following the floods experienced in the area due to the incessant rains.
Deputy Director and Media Spokesman of DMC Pradeep Koddippili said all units have been informed to remain on the alert for possible disaster situations which may arise. He noted that 1,724 individuals of 456 families have been evacuated due to the weather conditions.
The DMC office in Jaffna says that rainfall of 500mm was experienced in the area, over the past few days, due to the disturbance in the Bay of Bengal.
DMC has recorded that over 2,700 families or over 9,500 persons were affected by floods since the beginning of this month. Only one death has been recorded.
All DMC units, the Police and the three armed forces are engaged in relief efforts.
