The nominations of the proposed new members for the Constitutional Council have been handed over to the Speaker of Parliament Karu Jayasuriya.
Accordingly, the nominations of the six new members made under the recommendations of the Prime Minister, Opposition Leader and Minor parties have been submitted to the Speaker.
New members for the Constitutional Council are slated to be appointed within this week, the Speaker’s Office stated.
The Speaker, the Prime Minister and the Opposition Leader will be appointed to the Constitutional Council ex-officio.
The term of office of Minister Mahinda Samarasinghe, who was recently appointed as the President’s Representative to the Constitutional Council, has not expired and he currently holds office in the council.
