Sri Lanka Speaker Karu Jayasuriya has informed Parliament that former president and United People’s Freedom Alliance (UPFA) Kurunegala district parliamentarian Mahinda Rajapaksa will be the Leader of the Opposition.
Deputy Speaker of House Ananda Kumarasiri today informed the Parliament of Speaker’s final decision on the Opposition Leader post.
Mr Rajapaksa replaces Tamil National Alliance (TNA) Leader R. Sampanthan as Opposition Leader.
The Speaker had also responded to a request by a group of MPs for a Parliament Select Committee over Rajapaksa’s appointment as Opposition Leader.
The group of MPs says the former president has obtained the membership of the Sri Lanka Podujana Peramuna (SLPP) on or before the 11th of November, although elected to Parliament through the UPFA ticket.
When the parliament convened for the first time on December 18 after the UNP leader Ranil Wickremesinghe was reinstated as the Prime Minister, the UPFA nominated Mahinda Rajapaksa to the Opposition Leader post replacing TNA leader R Sampanthan.
