A Rajapaksa should be the next president – MP

Incumbent Maithripala Sirisena’s life will be safe only if a Rajapaksa contests and wins the next presidential election, says MP Roshan Ranasinghe.

Speaking to the media at the SLPP headquarters, Ranasinghe said Sirisena and his family would be in danger if the UNP candidate won.

He also said it was easy to decide from the outcome of the last local government polls as to who should field their candidate.

At the election, the SLPP polled 47 per cent of the votes and the SLFP polled only 14 pc of the votes.

Ranasinghe was responding to a claim by SLFP spokesman Mahinda Samarasinghe that Sirisena will be the SLFP’s candidate at the next presidential election.

Speaking to journalists at the Darley Road party headquarters, Samarasinghe said the incumbent would be fielded at the polls with the support of all SLFP MPs.

Ranasinghe’s worry

Political sources say Ranasinghe, the SLPP’s Polonnaruwa leader, is worried by speculation that Sirisena’s daughter Chaturika and brother Dudley were going to contest from the district at the next general election.

He has said that half of the Polonnaruwa people were with the SLPP and that they would contest under its ‘flower bud’ symbol only.

“No objections to Sirisena as the candidate”

However, SLFP senior vice president Nimal Siripala de Silva says Sirisena would be the candidate of a SLFP-led alliance for the polls.

He told journalists yesterday that the SLPP wanted the candidate to be acceptable to Mahinda Rajapaksa and that the former president has not objected to Sirisena becoming the candidate.

Sirisena will be the only candidate who is capable of challenging the UNP candidate, he said, adding that a division among them would be advantageous to their opponent.
