The final decision on the proposed coalition between the UPFA and SLPP would be decided upon at the meeting scheduled to be held on January 21 between President Maithripala Sirisena and Opposition Leader Mahinda Rajapaksa, according to MP Dilan Perera.
Perera had told the Aruna newspaper that around 20 representatives of parties within the UPFA and around 27 representatives of the SLPP would attend the meeting scheduled to be held at the President’s official residence.
He further said, “The coalition against Ranil would contest any upcoming election and only one candidate would be fielded for the upcoming presidential election. Currently, President Maithripala Sirisena is the frontrunner.
However, Maithripala or Gotabhaya cannot decide on who would contest the election. The leaders of the coalition formed by the party leaders including President Sirisena and Mahinda Rajapaksa.
In the event Maithripala Sirisena becomes the presidential candidate the first speech on stage would be made by Gotabhaya Rajapaksa and if Gotabhaya is the presidential candidate the first speech would be made by Maithripala.”
