The Sri Lanka Podu Jana Peramuna (SLPP) is not prepared to nominate any other candidate for presidency other than from the SLPP, said its founder Basil Rajapaksa.
He made this statement during the meeting with Provincial Councillors at the party headquarters yesterday (11).
Basil Rajapaksa noted, “The SLPP is certainly not prepared to promote a man who the village people do not accept. Therefore, the party leadership will never force its members to back a presidential candidate who is not accepted by the rural masses.
Definitely, the next president would be from the SLPP and he would be a member of the SLPP and his election logo could be the lotus bud.”
The founder of the SLPP has made this statement at a time when several members of the SLFP including Duminda Dissanayake is pressuring the SLPP to nominate Maithripala Sirisena as the Presidential candidate.
Duminda Dissanayake had told the media that Maithripala Sirisena is the common candidate for the upcoming presidential election and that Mahinda Rajapaksa and the Joint Opposition group and the SLPP should support this move unconditionally.
He had stressed that at the forthcoming Presidential election the Presidential candidate should definitely be Maithripala Sirisena from the SLFP led UPFA.
He had further noted that the UPFA has no moral right to oppose Sirisena’s nomination for the next Presidential election.
