The Jaffna University students had launched an awareness programme yesterday (12) to educate the Jaffna people on their planned protest demanding for an international investigation on war crimes allegations and that the time period given to Sri Lanka to respond to war crimes allegations is amply sufficient.
The Jaffna University students are planning a protest based on their above mentioned demands on March 16 and would also demand that war criminals be punished. The awareness campaign was organised to inform the people about it.
The Jaffna University students said that the Northern and Eastern people had no faith in a domestic investigation regarding the war crimes allegations and demanded for international mediation.
They said that although the United Nations Human Rights Council had given Sri Lanka ample time to investigate war crime abuses, nothing had been done to fulfil that obligation. Hence, they said the protest was organised to express their demands seeking for an international tribunal.
The students had constructed a war crimes effigy and fixed it onto a vehicle as a mascot during the awareness programme.
