Tamil National Alliance Spokesman, Parliamentarian and President’s Counsel M.A. Sumanthiran and former Foreign Secretary Prasad Kariyawasam have been appointed as special representatives of the United Nations (UN) Secretary General’s office for the South Asian Region.
Sumanthiran and Kariyawasam were selected as special representatives from Sri Lanka. There were 25 special representatives from 10 different countries who met in Nepal for a two-day conference.
Special representatives to the office of the UN Secretary General António Guterres, are also selected from Afghanistan, Bangladesh, Pakistan, India, Nepal, the Maldives, and Bhutan including Sri Lanka for South Asia.
Lawyer, diplomat and human rights advocate who served as the Under-Secretary-General of the UN, the Special Representative for Children, Dr. Radhika Coomaraswamy was also present at the Nepal talks held on 14 and 15 April.
It is said that most of the representatives were diplomats and high-ranking officials however only Sumanthiran and a Nepali were the two politicians among the selected representatives.
