PM requests Election Commission Chairman not to resign

Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe has requested the Election Commission Chairman Mahinda Deshapriya not to resign since elections are due in the coming months.

Informed sources said that Deshapriya had met the Prime Minister in his office in Parliament yesterday, to discuss national issues, including the holding of Provincial and presidential elections.

Deshapriya told the media in January this year, that he would quit his position if the government failed to hold the Provincial Council polls before November 10.

During the course of yesterday’s discussion, the Prime Minister had urged Deshapriya not to carry out his threat to resign, since this was an election year, sources said.
