A period of 60 and 50 days are required to hold the Provincial Council elections and presidential election respectively, says Election Commissioner – Mahinda Deshapriya.
However, the final date to hold the presidential election is December 07, he adds.
Holding both elections at a close time range could lead to an overlapping of the time periods, he notes adding that the Commission is not in favour of holding the PC polls in a manner that would hinder the presidential election.
Speaking further on reports citing that he would be keeping a firm hand on Facebook activity during the election period, Mr. Deshapriya said that the commission is of the opinion that certain measures are needed to keep hate
speech, misinformation, paid campaigns, mudslinging and unverified reports in control.
Meanwhile, in its lead news this weekend, the ‘Irida Lankadeepa’ has reported that the main political parties are preparing for a sudden PC election.
