Sri Lanka’s Marxist party, Janatha Vimukthi Peramuna (JVP) Sunday announced the party leader Anura Kumara Dissanayake as the presidential candidate of the National People’s Power (NPP), the alliance headed by the JVP at the upcoming presidential election.
The JVP made this announcement at the National People’s Power Rally held at the Galle Face Green today.
The party announced that the NPP, built with the JVP and several democratic, left and progressive political parties, civil society organizations and individuals put forward “a person with significant experience, a strong personality, who is against arbitrariness and corruption, loves the country and acceptable to all who hope for an alternative leader ship to the country” as the presidential candidate.
The JVP is contesting a Presidential Election after 20 years. The party supported SLFP candidate Mahinda Rajapaksa at 2005 presidential election and United National Front common candidate Sarath Fonseka at 2010 presidential election. JVP neither contested nor directly supported President Maithripala Sirisena at the January 2015 presidential election.
