The Speaker’s Office refuted claims being made that Speaker Karu Jayasuriya is planning on resigning from his post.
They said that these rumours are being circulated to put the Speaker into disrepute.
Meanwhile, the ‘Anidda’ newspaper reported Karu Jayasuriya having said that even if he is nominated with the support of the whole party, he would contest the presidency to serve for a short period with the sole intention of abolishing the executive powers of the president.
He is said to have made this comment based on the responses received by the UNP Leader Ranil Wickremesinghe and several others in the party.
However, the Speaker noted that he would not create friction within the party and side-line others and contest the presidency without the wholehearted support of the whole party.
Therefore, he said the rumours being spread that he is planning on contesting the presidential election to safeguard the leadership of Ranil Wickremesinghe is baseless and far from the truth.
