wo parties are currently said to be in talks to organise a meeting between President Maithripala Sirisena and Speaker Karu Jayasuriya.
It is reported that although the President had earlier been on a firm stand that he would not meet with Speaker Jayasuriya, his stand has somewhat changed due to numerous requests.
Sri Lanka Mirror learns that this discussion would also not be a secret meeting.
It is said that the purpose of this meeting is to defeat the Rajapaksa ideology in 2019 as they did in 2015.
Meanwhile, the weekend ‘Aruna’ newspaper had reported that former President Chandrika Bandaranaike Kumaratunge had requested the President not to assist in bringing in Sajith as a presidential candidate or support the
Rajapaksas’ to come into power.
It is reported that a meeting between President Sirisena and former President Kumaratunge had taken place at the Presidential Secretariat last 22nd.
During the 20 minute meeting Kumaratunge had requested President Sirisena not to assist these two parties.
The former President Kumaratunge had told Sirisena that if he grants her wish, she would ensure the required security for him in the future.
It is also reported that such a direct discussion between the current and former President had taken place after around one year.
Meanwhile, UNP Leader and Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe is said to be on a firm footing that despite the UNP working Committee and the MP group meeting, he would not allow for a secret vote.
However, Presidential hopeful Sajith Premadasa had stated that in the event the UNP Working Committee and group of MPs fail to reach a decision by Monday (26), the Sajith faction would take an alternative decision, Sajith
faction Spokesman Ajith P. Perera said.
Perera also said however, that they would not form a separate party.
