The Criminal Investigations Department today informed Fort Magistrate Ranga Dissanayake that the Attorney General had instructed to charge three suspects, including former Navy Commander Admiral Wasantha Karannagoda, in connection with the abduction and disappearance of 11 Tamil youths in 2008-2009.
The other two suspects to be indicted are first accused Lt. Commander Nilantha Sampath Munasinghe and businessman Anton Fernando, who had been released on bail.
The Criminal Investigation Department had filed a motion requesting the court to issue a notice to Wasantha Karannagoda to appear in court as he was not taken into custody in connection with the incident. However, the magistrate refused the request.
Colombo Fort Magistrate said there is no provision in the law to issue a notice to Karannagoda to appear in court and asked the CID to inform the court through a state council under which clause the request is being made.
While, CID inspector Nishantha Silva informed the court that a senior government counsel is drafting the charges against Wasantha Karannagoda, the Magistrate informed the CID that Wasantha Karannagoda could be named as the 16th suspect.
