What will be the stance of the Sri Lanka Freedom Party in the future? Former President Maithripala Sirisena as the Chairman of the Party spoke about their future today (January 14). He noted that it doesn’t matter how much power a President has, if he does not have the power in Parliament, he won’t be able to work. He noted that as far as he knows, the Parliament will be dissolved on March 3rd.
The former President pointed out that before the election, they signed an agreement with the SLPP as well as with President Gotabaya Rajapaksa. He said the main task behind all those agreements was working towards his victory and another was to join and work together at the general election. He added that those were the agreements signed by the coalition formed by their two parties for the development and the future of the country.
Therefore, Maithripala Sirisena noted that it is of utmost importance that all of them come together to solve the problems of the country and achieve a resounding victory at the upcoming election. He said that by doing so the Polonnaruwa District will have a historic victory as well.
The Sri Lanka Freedom Party has appointed a committee to select new organizers. The party’s General Secretary Dayasiri Jayasekara spoke to the media today.
Dayasiri Jayasekara: We hope to send applications to fill all the vacant seats in the SLFP.The President has addressed our former president Maithripala Sirisena. With the leadership of Professor Rohana Lakshman Piyadasa, we have appointed a committee and it is through that committee the process for selecting organizers is expected to occur. We hope to work in one alliance towards the upcoming parliamentarian election. The SLFP along with other parties are also due to join us and we have named it the Sri Lanka Freedom People’s Alliance. You know, I also think we established a new executive council there.
Journalist: Is the executive committee SLFP or UPFA?
Dayasiri Jayasekara: No it’s the Podujana Eksath Peramuna. We created the Podujana Eksath Peramuna in 1994. We hope to move forward with this party we’ve created and the party symbol is the chair. There is a suggestion to bring the Pohottuwa symbol instead of the chair but if we bring forward the Pohottuwa then the Podujana Peramuna will lose its Pohottuwa but that is not our problem. It is a decsion that needs to be made by them. We have no issue with that.
Journalist: To fulfill the promise of Gotabaya Rajapaksa, a 2/3 majority of 150 is needed. If you are planning on doing this alone, will it be possible to obtain a 2/3rd majority?
Dayasiri Jayasekara: So that is something that will be decided in the future. Nobody can underestimate the value of the SLFP and Gotabaya Rajapaksa knows that very well. Even if we are not there, and if they contested separately and if you remove our 1.4 million, then Sajith Premadasa will only receive 5.5 million. Those are the real numbers. So I ask from our party that even though various problems and malpractices occur, we should not fall on them. We should be strengthened by these instead. Our SLFP members, our organizers, and ministers must understand this very well and we should make an effort towards this as well.
