The Criminal Investigations Department (CID) today recorded a statement from the former Director of the CID SSP Shani Abeysekara for about 6 hours with regard to the investigations on the Swiss Embassy employee Ganiya Bannister Francis, who had claimed that she was abducted and questioned by an unidentified group in a white vehicle.
Abeysekara was summoned to the CID today (23) for questioning following information uncovered during the investigations that the Swiss Embassy employee allegedly had telephone conversations with the former CID Director.
The Criminal Investigation Department on Tuesday revealed to the courts that Ganiya Banister Francis, during the time of the alleged abduction, had contacted several individuals including SSP Abeysekara over the phone using a SIM card under the name Lakna Paranamanna.
Ms. Francis has also allegedly contacted former CID Inspector Nishantha Silva, who had fled to Switzerland, the former chairman of the Lake House Krishantha Cooray and former Observer editor Darisha Bastian over the phone during the time period the alleged abduction took place.
Darisha Bastian, Krishantha Cooray and ex-IP Nishantha Silva are currently in Switzerland.
Further, the CID had informed Colombo Chief Magistrate Lanka Jayaratne that IP Silva had engaged in a telephone conversation with Abeysekara for nearly 9 minutes before departing to Switzerland from the Katunayake Airport on 24th November.
Accordingly, the Colombo Chief Magistrate ordered that the former Director of the Criminal Investigations Department, Shani Abeysekara, to appear before the Colombo Crimes Division and make a statement.
