Youth abduction case: Ravindra can’t be released

Court today determined that it cannot release former Chief of Defence Staff Admiral Ravindra Wijegunaratne and Laksiri Amarasinghe from the case pertaining to the abduction and disappearance of 11 Tamil youth in 2008.

The duo is charged with aiding and abetting former Lieutenant Commander, Chandana Prasad Hettiarachchi, who is a suspect in the youth abduction case, to flee the country and abscond from the law.

Colombo Fort Magistrate Ranga Dissanayake today pronounced the determination following a request made by the accused during the last hearing.

The Magistrate further stated that as a number of charges and evidences have been presented against the two suspects by the Criminal Investigations Department, the validity of the charges can only be determined following a court hearing.

Fort Magistrate Dissanayake meanwhile said the duo cannot be released according to section 120(3) of the Code of Criminal Procedure.

Additionally, court also ordered the CID to consider naming Chandana Prasad Hettiarachchi as a suspect in this case as well.

The case will be taken up for hearing once again on the 29th of August.
