UNP requests Election Commission not to recognize the new alliance

The United National Party (UNP) has opposed the registration of a new political party named Samagi Jathika Balawegaya.

The Legal Secretary of the UNP President’s Counsel Nissanka Nanayakkara had written to the Charmin of the national Election Commission Mahinda Deshapriya yesterday requesting the Election Commission not to recognize any party that will harm the identity of the UNP.

In his letter, the UNP legal Secretary points out that when translated into English, the Samagi Jathika Balawegaya reads as United National Power which can be abbreviated to ‘UNP’, same as the abbreviation for United National Party.

The Legal Secretary further says that in the event such a party is registered it would bear a similarity to the already registered UNP and requests the Election Commission to refrain from recognizing the new party.

Similarly the UNP requests the Election Commission not to recognize changes made to a party name if the new name when translated to English can be abbreviated to ‘UNP’.

The alliance formed by the UNP faction with the Opposition Leader Sajith Premadasa as the leader was registered with the Election Commission under the name Samagi Jana Balawegaya. Monaragala district MP Ranjith Madduma Bandara has been appointed as the General Secretary of the new alliance formed to contest the upcoming general election.
