Speaker urges EC to invite foreign observers to monitor General Election campaign

Speaker Karu Jayasuriya yesterday requested the Election Commission to expedite the process of inviting foreign observers to monitor the forthcoming election campaign.

Jayasuriya made the request when he was presented with a book titled ‘Sri Lanka Parliamentary Elections 1947 to 2015’ by Chairman of the Election Commission, Mahinda Deshapriya, at the Parliamentary Complex, yesterday, (24) afternoon. The book contains information about elections as well as parliamentary election results from 1947.

Jayasuriya requested the Commission that the European Union and other relevant parties be informed of the election and the importance of monitoring it. He also urged the Elections Commission to take necessary steps to ensure that the media would act impartially during the election period.

Deshapriya said that he appreciated the support extended by the Speaker, the Deputy Speaker and the Secretary General of Parliament and his staff in carrying out the tasks of the Commission.

Deputy Speaker Ananda Kumarasiri, Chief of Staff and Deputy Secretary General of Parliament Neil Iddawala and members of the Elections Commission were among those present on the occasion.
