Election Monitoring Body the People’s Action for Free and Fair Elections has urged the public to cast their vote, as polling centres are assuredly safe for the public.
Speaking at a media briefing held in Colombo, Executive Director of PAFFREL Rohana Hettiarachchi said the National Election Commission has taken steps to ensure that health and safety guidelines are followed at polling centres.
He urged voters to wear a face mask, bring a pen and bring their official polling card, as it makes it is easier to find their name on the list.
He added however that if the voter’s name is in the 2019 voter register, there is no issue, even if a voter fails to bring the polling card.
Hettiarachchi said voters must confirm their identity at polling centres, in order to cast their vote.
He said the Election Commission has named six documents which could be used to for this purpose, including the National Identity Card, Elders’ Identity Card, Clergy Identity Card, Pensioner’ Identity Card, valid Driving Licence or the temporary Identity Card issued by the Commission.
