Special arrangements for security of ballot boxes

Elections Commission Chairman Mahinda Deshapriya has said that a number of special measures have been taken regarding the security of ballot boxes as the counting of votes will begin the day after the election due to the Corona epidemic.

In addition to security officials, representatives of political parties and independent groups have been given the opportunity to ensure the security of the ballot boxes on the night of the parliamentary elections.

The Election Commission has decided that each political party and independent group will have the opportunity to retain its representatives in the premises of the counting center, two for each constituency.

Mr. Deshapriya said the ballot boxes will be inserted into another large box and sealed since the ballots will not be counted in the same night after being taken to the counting centers and handed over to the counting officer.

The Chairman of the Election Commission Mahinda Deshapriya stated that the health of the voters has been ensured to the maximum extent possible.

Meanwhile, the campaigning for the 2020 Parliamentary election on 5th August ended at midnight Sunday (02).

Accordingly, the period up to August 05, when the election will be held, has been declared a period of silence and no campaigning or promotional activities for candidates or parties could be carried out during this period, the Elections Commission stated

Police Media Spokesman SSP Jaliya Senaratne stated that the law will be enforced against any person or group who violates election laws during the silent period.
