Attorney General Dappula de Livera today denied that he had approved the Millennium Challenge Corporation (MCC) development assistance grant.
Issuing a statement Attorney General’s Coordinating Officer State Counsel Nishara Jayaratne said the media reports, which claim that the MCC agreement was approved by the Attorney General were untrue.
Various media outlets reported that the Attorney General’s Department has confirmed in writing that the MCC Agreement does not violate any law in Sri Lanka.
State Counsel Nishara Jayaratne said the media reports made the claim citing a letter dated 10.10.2018, in which the Senior Additional Solicitor General Sanjaya Rajaratnam PC, presenting the official opinion of the then Attorney General, has confirmed in writing that there is no impediment to the signing of the MCC Agreement or the implementation of the project under Sri Lankan law.
The Coordinating Officer however said the current Attorney General’s opinion is that according to the letter, no statement has been made on the constitutionality of the MCC agreement and the Attorney General is still studying the MCC agreement.
