Akashi says Japan can be Sri Lanka’s liaison with West

Japan is willing to help Sri Lanka improve relations with the West, Japanese envoy Yasushi Akashi has told Sri Lankan president Mahinda Rajapaksa, Kyodo News Agency reports.Mr. Akashi, who last week concluded a visit to the island, has said that he had told president Rajapaksa in a meeting that Japan is “willing to assist in the efforts to develop the relationship between Sri Lanka and the international community.”Western countries are concerned about alleged human rights abuses during the final stages of the war against the LTTE.Mr. Akashi was due to visit New Delhi en route to Japan to brief the Indian government on his Sri Lanka visit and also participate in an event commemorating 60 years of diplomatic relations between Japan and India.
