Point Pedro jetty now open for fishermen

The jetty at Vadamarachchi, Point Pedro, which had been prohibited for use over the past 14 years, was opened recently to enable fishermen in the area to make use of it.The security forces had prohibited the use of this jetty for fishing activities since 1998 due to the prevailing security concerns at the time. This had caused the fisher community in the area severe difficulties in engaging in their only livelihood.Following the Vadamarachchi Fsheries Co-operative Society and the Fisheries Department bringing this to the notice of the Minister of Traditional Industries and Small Enterprise Development, the Minister had discussions with the relevant authorities and steps were taken to open the jetty for the fishing activities in the area. This not only helps the fishermen to engage in their traditional livelihood but also enables them to moor their boats safely during period of unfavorable weather and natural disasters.
