Five railway personnel suspended over train accident in Sri Lanka
Sri Lanka Railways (SLR) has said that a special team has been deployed to investigate the train collision that took place Tuesday at the Pothuhera station.
General Manager of Sri Lanka Railways B.A.P. Ariyaratne said that a five-member committee has been appointed to investigate the collision and necessary steps would be taken after a thorough investigation into the accident where two trains, one moving and one stationary, collided head on and injured over 70 passengers.
The Pallai-bound Deyata Kirula train from Colombo collided with the Matara-bound Rajarata Rajina train that was stationary at the Pothuhera station in Kurunegala yesterday morning.
The Railways has meanwhile suspended five personnel who were on duty at the time of the incident.
The engine driver, his assistant and guard on the Deyata Kirula train Colombo-Palai train, along with the signal controller and station master at the Pothuhera train station have been relieved of their duty until the investigation is completed.
The SLR official said the two engines of the trains and two more compartments were completely destroyed in the collision and the losses would amount to about Rs.100 million.
The official has told the local media that the Railway Department will take measures to compensate the injured passengers.
