Details of 2,000 web child abusers exposed

The National Child Protection Authority (NCPA) has found details of more than 2,000 persons who had attempted to sexually abuse children through the internet.

The NCPA Investigations Unit under the guidance of its Chairperson Anoma Dissanayake, arrested six persons over attempted abuse. “There are several government employees and some professionals among those arrested,” the NCPA said.

The Internet investigation Unit of the NCPA was reorganised last January as a measure to minimise the use of internet for child abuse.

NCPA also seeks public assistance to provide any information relating to individuals aiding child abuse over the 24-hour hotline 1929.

The NCPA said it was also the responsibility of parents and teachers to protect children from these persons as they are very tactful and children should be warned against the misuse of the internet.

“Arrangements have also been made by the Authority to provide guidance and assistance through 1929 for the proper use of internet by the children. We have planned to implement various awareness programmes to protect the children from the child abusers,” it said.
