Minister S.B. Dissanayake told reporters that the US and some other countries had used all their power in the attempt to end the war but they failed.
He said that pressure was also exerted through the UN, Norway and the British Government.
However he said President Mahinda Rajapaksa had refused to succumb to pressure and eventually defeated the LTTE.
He said that the US Government later used the UN Human Rights Council to get back at President Mahinda Rajapaksa by proposing an international investigation on Sri Lanka.
The Minister noted that while an international investigation, which was approved by the UN Human Rights Council, is now underway, countries working against Sri Lanka lost out on India’s support after the BJP Government came to power.
As a result, he claims, those countries have now obtained the support of the EU to lift the sanctions on the LTTE.
He said that Sri Lanka is now at peace and the public in the war affected north and east of the country do not want another war in the country. The Minister also accused the Tamil National Alliance of attempting to divide the country.
Meanwhile, asked about the files of the Government members, said to be in the hands of the President, the Minister said that it is nothing unusual to have such files.
