Maj. Gen. Silva’s nomination opposed

There has been opposition to the nomination of Maj. Gen. Shavendra Silva as Sri Lanka’s deputy high commissioner in South Africa.The South African government has asked the Sri Lankan government not to go ahead with the nomination, South Africa Legal Centre directress Nicole Fitts has told BBC Tamil Service.She has said that according to unconfirmed reports, the nomination of Maj. Gen. Silva has now been withdrawn.Her organization has told the South African president’s office and the international relations ministry that acceptance of the nomination of a person, against whom there were war crimes allegations, would be an infringement of the country’s constitution.When contacted, government spokesman Keheliya Rambuwella has said the cabinet has approved the nomination, and that South Africa has the right to either accept or reject it.He was not aware Maj. Gen. Silva’s nomination has been withdrawn.
