Leftist ally of Sri Lanka ruling party to abstain from voting on impeachment debate

a leftist ally of the Sri Lanka ruling alliance has decided to abstain from voting when parliament takes its vote on impeachment of the Chief Justice this week.The Lanka Sama Samaja Party (LSSP) during a meeting of the party’s Central Working Committee held Sunday has decided to abstain from voting when parliament votes on the impeachment motion, LSSP Parliamentarian, Venerable Baddegama Samitha Thera said.According to the LSSP legislator, the Central working Committee of the party had taken this decision in accordance with a previous decision taken by the Socialist Front, which comprises of leftist parties including the LSSP, Democratic People’s Front and the Sri Lanka Communist Party.Meanwhile, the Secretary of the Communist Party of Sri Lanka, Senior Minister D.E.W. Gunasekera yesterday said his party has decided to vote against the impeachment motion but added that a common decision on the Supreme Court verdict on the parliamentary select committee (PSC) that probed the impeachment motion will be reached after discussions with LSSP Leader Minister Prof. Tissa Vitharana and Leader of the Democratic Leftist Front Vasudeva Nanayakkara.
