Neither courts nor media can topple govt.: only a mass uprising could– Ranil

The Opposition and UNP leader Ranil Wickremesinghe said yesterday that neither the courts nor the media could topple the Mahinda Rajapaksa regime and it could only be done through a people’s uprising.Addressing a ceremony to grant UNP membership for this year at Sirikotha, Wickremesinghe said that though he was repeatedly torn to pieces by some journalists who preached media and judicial freedom during the day and wined and dined with ministers at night, the Chief Justice episode had proved him right once again.”I have repeatedly said it was pointless going to courts and been proved right time and again. No politician in this country has been hit harder by the media than I. But, I am like a football, the harder you kick me the higher I go”, he said, while noting that Chief Justice Shirani Bandaranayake had every right to seek legal redress against the flawed process adopted by the Parliamentary Select Committee that inquired into five of the 14 allegations pertaining to her official and personal conduct contained in the Impeachment Motion. The Supreme Court ruling that only it had the right to interpret the Constitution had been rejected by the government, which confirmed the UNP’s stand that even courts could not discipline the current regime, he noted. The Opposition leader said that it was only the UNP which could restore law and order and all those who believed in democracy, judicial independence and rule of law, should rally round it. The party was being re-organised at grassroots level and had re-emerged as a strong force.Wickremesinghe also accused the government of preaching about a Dharmista (righteous) society while permitting Russian prostitutes to enter Colombo in large numbers.A group of SLFPers from Mahara obtained UNP membership yesterday.
