Bathiudeen to be tried on June 24 Contempt of Court case

The Court of Appeal yesterday fixed June 24, 2013, as the date on which Minister of Industry and Commerce Rishard Bathiudeen will go on trial on charges of Contempt of Court.A group of lawyers from Mannar had complained to Court that the Minister abused the Mannar Magistrate, Anthony Jude, over the telephone, on or about, July 17, 2013. Later, he had called the secretary of the Judicial services Commission to transfer the Magistrate from Mannar. The abuse had been due to a judicial order made by the Magistrate.Earlier, notice was issued on the Minister, who then denied being guilty of the offence.Consequently, the issue was fixed for trial. President’s Counsel Faiz Mustapha appeared for Minister Bathiudeen, while President’s Counsel Romesh de Silva appeared with Ikram Mohammead and Sugath Caldera for the petitioner lawyers, President’s Counsel Jeff Alagaratnam and six others.The Court of Appeal Bench comprised Justice Rohini Marasinghe and Justice Deepali Wijesundera.
