Sri Lanka’s Defense Secretary Gotabhaya Rajapakse will take legal action against any political character regardless of his social status if he is responsible for crimes.The Defense Secretary made this assurance to the public at a press briefing held in Ministry of Defense Tuesday and said the police have full powers to bring such politicians to justice.Secretary Rajapaksa also added that no politician is allowed to grab or encroach state or private lands and to harass the public.The Defense Secretary has stressed that drug dealers, mercenaries and extortionists in the country will be strictly dealt with and action will be taken to eliminate underworld gangs and create a peaceful environment for the public.He has appealed the public and the opposition parties to extend their utmost support to the government to prevent crime and apprehend criminals.The ruling party has come under criticism from the public as well as from the opposition for failing to take strict measures against the involvement of several ruling party politicians in crimes.Recently the police arrested two ruling party local government politicians in the Southern Province in separate incidents for raping two minor girls.A Pradeshiya Sabha member who was a coordinating secretary of the Minister of State Administration and Home Affairs W.D. John Seneviratne was arrested for committing a double murder of a mother and a daughter in Ratnapura district in March this year.Last year a ruling party chairman of a local council was arrested for murdering a British Tourist at a Christmas Eve party in Tangalle.
