Sri Lanka Muslim Congress reverses decision to contest Eastern PC election with governing party

The Sri Lanka Muslim Congress (SLMC) today reversed its decision to contest the forthcoming Eastern provincial Council election with the governing United People’s Freedom Alliance (UPFA).The SLMC decided this morning to contest the Eastern Provincial Council separately under the party’s tree symbol.SLMC Leader and Minister Rauf Hakeem confirmed today that the party would contest the forthcoming elections separately. However, he said the SLMC would work closely with the government and that the President had given his blessings to the party to contest separately at the Eastern Provincial Council election. The SLMC decision to contest separately was made following objections by some party members for contesting under UPFA banner.A dispute over the allocation of slots to SLMC members in the three districts in the Eastern Province finally has resulted in the party decision to contest separately.
