Murder accused’s safe house belongs to politico’s advisor

The CID managed to arrest one of the key accused in the murder of British national Khuram Shaikh and the rape of his Russian girlfriend at a Tangalle holiday resort on Christmas eve 2011 after he had failed to appear in court on January 9, just hours before the trial resumed yesterday.

Police spokesman SSP Ajith Rohana told The Island that one of the CID teams had arrested the Tangalle PS chairman SampathVidanapathirana, the wanted accused in the murder of the British national while he was hiding in a house at Kotte near Ananda Sastralaya.

Asked why the owner of the house had not been arrested for harbouring a person wanted by a court, he said that the house belonged to one of the PS Chairman’s friends and the CID had recorded a statement from the house owner.

Well informed sources told The Island that the house belonged to an advisor of a powerful politician.

SSP Rohana said that the police would file a case against the house owner for harbouring a fugitive and the Attorney General’s advice would be obtained for that purpose.

The accused through his attorneys, on January 9, told the court that he was ill and at a private hospital in Tangalle. But the court issued an arrest warrant on him when the lawyers appearing for him failed to submit documents to support it.

The police failed to apprehend the PS Chairman until the last moment yesterday.
