A memorial statue of Thileepan, a former political wing leader of the LTTE, was removed and taken away by police a short while ago from Nallur, Jaffna.
A statue was erected in Nallur in his memory following the commemoration last week of the 39th anniversary of Thileepan’s death, after he undertook a hunger strike.
Following the conclusion of the final day of the commemoration yesterday, the statue was removed by police this morning, September 27, and taken away in a vehicle.
Police Media Spokesperson ASP F. U. Wootler said the action was taken after police reported the relevant facts to court following a complaint regarding the statue.
He further stated that the statue was removed under provisions of the Penal Code to maintain public order and enforce the law.
