Sri Lanka Cricket (SLC) said construction of the Jaffna International Cricket Stadium is continuing as planned after a temporary halt caused by a cyclone, expressing confidence the project will be completed within its original timeline.
Issuing a statement on Tuesday (30), SLC said work on the stadium in Mandaitivu, Jaffna, had been disrupted by Cyclone Ditwah, which interrupted the scheduled construction program and forced the postponement of a trial game that had been set for January 14, 2026. Construction has since resumed.
SLC said the trial match will now be held after the conclusion of the ICC Men’s T20 International Cricket World Cup 2026, which will be co-hosted by Sri Lanka and India.
The stadium is being developed on 48 acres and will feature 10 center wickets, with boundary distances extending up to 80 meters.
SLC said the project is part of a plan to establish a sports city in Jaffna spanning 138 acres.
Officials described the stadium as a key initiative aimed at strengthening cricket development in Sri Lanka’s Northern Province and supporting SLC’s National Pathway Programme.
SLC said it remains confident the stadium will be completed according to schedule despite the earlier weather-related disruption.
