‘Legislature must take decision on PC Election’

The National Election Commission says the legislature must take a suitable decision pertaining to the continuously delayed Provincial Council Election.

Chairman of the Election Commission Nimal Punchihewa speaking to NewsRadio said subsequent to Parliament tabling solutions to the concerns in the Provincial Council Election Act, the method under which the election will be conducted will be decided.

He noted that when the matter was taken up before the Supreme Court, it was determined that the legislature must take necessary measures.

Punchihewa said while a new amended Provincial Council Election Act was approved, a delimitation evaluation report pertaining to Provincial Councils was not submitted leading to the delays.

He therefore noted that all concerns must be resolved prior to holding the election.

The Election Chairman also stated that under the new Act, the election cannot be held under the old electoral system.

He stated that the matter will require time owing to the lengthy process. Punchihewa said the only resolve would be to table the old Provincial Council Election Act with amendments to have it passed, claiming that thereafter the Election Commission will be able to hold the Provincial Council Election.
