Govt Ready to Face Any Challenge at UNHRC

Minister of Public Security, Rear Admiral Dr. Sarath Weerasekera said, the Sri Lanka Podujana Peramuna (SLPP) Government was more than capable of facing any kind of charge levelled against the country during the next United Nations Human Rights Council (UNHRC) sessions in March.

He said, many countries had already assured their support for Sri Lanka at the forthcoming sessions.

Dr. Weerasekera made these remarks when asked for his views regarding the decision taken by LTTE sympathisers and the Tamil National Alliance, to exert pressure on the Sri Lankan Government delegation who would take part in the next UNHRC sessions, due to take place in Geneva, Switzerland.

The Minister maintained the Sri Lankan Armed Forces had not committed any kind of war crimes and asserted the Government was ready to even furnish proof at the coming sessions that the local forces personnel had carried out a massive humanitarian operation to save civilians who were in the grip of the LTTE.

He also mentioned that former UN High Commissioner for Human Rights Zeid Raad Al Hussein and the Darusman Commission had thwarted all attempts made by Sri Lanka to submit the Lessons Learnt and Reconciliation Commission and the Paranagama Commission reports, the latter on missing persons, to the UNHRC.

He added the Government was looking to produce both of those reports to the UNHRC at its next session in March.

Dr. Weerasekera stressed that countries such as China, Russia, Cuba and Pakistan had expressed their intention to support Colombo at the upcoming sessions in Geneva.
