Opposition Leader Sajith Premadasa he would be personally committed to ensuring the safety of SJB MP Harin Fernando who was at the receiving end of a tirade launched by President Gotabhaya Rajapaksa in Ampara yesterday.
“If anything happens to Harin Fernando, the President and the Government must take responsibility,” Premadasa said addressing a public meeting.
“I consider this dangerous statement a threat to my life. Our parliamentary group also feels the same way. We are fully committed to protecting our MP and will take every possible step to ensure his safety,” he added.
Premadasa said he would not away from death threats like some leaders they had in the past. “I will fully stand by my MP and do everything in my capacity to protect him. I will commit myself to the task every day of the week,” the Opposition Leader said.
Fernando has already sent a letter to the IGP on the perceived death threat and has requested more security.
