Sri Lanka Buddhist party Jathika Hela Urumaya (JHU) prepares to file a petition today to challenge a petition filed at the Supreme Court to examine the constitutionality of the government’s Divi Neguma bill.According to the JHU media spokesman Nishantha Sri Warnasinghe, party leader Ven. Omalpe Sobhitha Thero is expected to present the bill to the Supreme Court.JHU is vehemently against power devolution and strongly backs a powerful central government.The Supreme Court recently ruled that the Divi Neguma Bill, according to the 13th Amendment to Constitution will get included in the Provincial Council list and hence, the act should be submitted to the opinion of Provincial Councils and the President.The Supreme Court will examine today if the Divi Neguma Bill can be approved by the Governor of the Northern Province in absence of a democratically elected council.A writ petition filed in this regard by Jaffna District Tamil National Alliance (TNA) parliamentarian Mavai Senathirajah was directed by Colombo Appeal court to the Supreme Court for its consideration.Senathirajah in his petition had questioned the Governor’s authority to sanction the bill that requires approval from the Northern Provincial Council which is yet to be established.
