UNP MPs who attended Hyde Park rally face suspension

Three UNP MPs and two Provincial Councillors who attended yesterday’s rally at Hyde Park, in defiance of the Working Committee’s decision, were faced with a suspension order after General Secretary Tissa Attanayake reported their conduct to UNP leader Ranil Wickremesinghe last night.Attanayake, when contacted told The Island that he had informed the UNP leader in writing that parliamentarians Palitha Ranga Bandara, Asoka Abeysinghe and Palitha Thavarapperuma and Provincial Councillors Maithri Gunaratne and Shiral Lakthillake had participated in the Hyde Park meeting in breach of the party directive. Asked if he had recommended their suspension, Attanayake said it was a decision for Wickremesinghe to make in terms of the party constitution.”As General Secretary, it is my duty to file a report to the leader with supporting evidence and I have done that”, he said, adding that the power to act was in Wickremesinghe’s hands. The leader had two options; the first was to suspend those who violated party discipline pending an inquiry or hold the inquiry first and implement its recommendations thereafter, Attanayake said.Karu Jayasuriya MP as reported in The Island yesterday decided at the eleventh hour not to attend the Hyde Park rally.Jayasuriya was mentioned as Co-leader of the new Alliance that Fonseka was to head, but he denied it.
