A lesson in autonomy

The Chinese Government has extended an invitation to the Tamil National Alliance (TNA) to tour its Guangxi  Zhuang  autonomous region, to study autonomy there and to take part in discussions with regard to political and economy-related matters in Wuhan, the capital of Hubei Province and in the Chinese capital Beijing.A three-member TNA delegation will be led by the Alliance’s media coordinator and veteran journalist,N. Vithyatharan,  who was taken into custody by the military intelligence in February and released after two months in 2009.Vithyatharan told Ceylon Today the invitation by the Chinese Government was extended to the TNA following the recent meeting between Chinese Ambassador, Wu Jianghao and the Alliance in Colombo, followed by the Chinese envoy’s recent visit to Jaffna.“ During the meeting between the Chinese Ambassador and the TNA,  the North and East political situation was discussed extensively, especially  the need to devolve powers to the North and East. Following the meeting with the TNA, the Chinese envoy also visited Jaffna and had witnessed the socio, political and the economic trends in the North,” Vithyatharan said.He also said that the three-member TNA delegation was travelling to Nanning, the capital of China’s Guangxi autonomous region. Guangxi Zhuang has remained an autonomous region at the provincial level in China from the period of the Yuan Dynasty.The TNA delegation will leave for China tomorrow and the tour will last for ten days till 15 November. The Tamil National Alliance Leader, R. Sampanthan has briefed the three -member delegation on the issues to be discussed according to Vithyatharan.The other members in the delegation include S. Suhirthan , Chairman, Valikamam Pradeshiya Sabha in the North and TNA Eastern Provincial Councillor Krishnapillai Seyon.
