Sri Lanka Army to recruit 100 female Tamil soldiers

Sri Lanka Army spokesman Brigadier Ruwan Wanigasooriya said the Army has taken steps to recruit 100 female Tamil soldiers to the force. The Army will hold a special ceremony in the former Tamil Tiger stronghold of Kilinochchi on Saturday to select 100 women in the age group of 18-22 to undergo training as soldiers.Under a special programme by the Kilinochchi security forces headquarters, the women will be recruited from Kilinochchi and Mullaitivu districts which were under Tamil Tiger rebel control before 2009.The female Tamil soldiers are to be mobilized in peace building and reconciliation programs conducted by the security forces in these areas. The Army spokesman highlighted that any Sri Lankan individual irrespective of race or creed can join Army following due recruitment process. However, the recruitment of ethnic Tamils was minimal during the ethnic war and the situation paved way to the Tamil nationalists to name Sri Lanka Army as a Sinhalese Army.
