Sri Lanka’s long-delayed new Constitution will move from promise to process in early January 2027, when the government plans to open formal discussions, general secretary of the National People’s Power (NPP), MP Dr. Nihal Abeysinghe said.
He said that the date for provincial council elections depends on a Parliamentary Select Committee (PSC) report, which the government is still awaiting.
Dr. Abeysinghe noted that the PC elections and the new Constitution are the only two NPP pledges that have yet to be met, and that all the others are being delivered at present.
He said government action to hold the polls will follow once the PSC submits its findings.
