He was speaking at the launch of the policy manifesto of the alliance yesterday (31).

The manifesto promises an audit into debt and to recover the defrauded and wasted credit from those responsible.

Also, the privatisation of state entities will be halted.

It promises a low-cost fuel quota for public transport and an energy quota for farmers, fishermen and other small producers, a pay hike for all sectors from Rs. 16,000 to Rs. 57,500 and free electricity for households using less than 30 units per month.

Also included are autonomy beyond the 13th amendment, abolition of the executive presidency, a more populist legal system, formation of people’s courts and abolition of the death penalty.

Wijeyadasa places deposits to contest Presidential election

Former Justice Minister Dr. Wijeyadasa Rajapakshe has placed a deposit with the Election Commission as a candidate for the 2024 Presidential Election.

Rajapakshe has placed the deposit as the presidential candidate of the National Democratic Front.

On July 25, the MP had officially announced that he would contest the upcoming Presidential Election while he had stepped down from his ministerial position as the Minister of Justice, Prisons Affairs and Constitutional Reforms on July 29.

PM pushes to patch up RW and MR

Prime Minister Dinesh Gunawardena, as the leader of Mahajana Eksath Peramuna (MEP), still continues with his political efforts to unite Sri Lanka Podujana Peramuna (SLPP) with President Ranil Wickremesinghe in view of the Presidential Elections, a source familiar with the two leaders said yesterday.

The Prime Minister who is close to both the President as his schoolmate and SLPP leader Mahinda Rajapaksa made efforts to unite all the parties aligned with the government to form a common platform in support of the President at the elections, but it failed because SLPP founder Basil Rajapaksa and National Organizer Namal Rajapaksa were adamant that a separate candidate should be fielded under the party’s Lotus symbol. In a split decision, the SLPP Central Committee decided to nominate a candidate of its choice instead of backing the President.

According to the source, the Prime Minister coordinated meetings between the President and Mr. Mahinda Rajapaksa to explore the possibility of an electoral alliance.

The source said the Prime Minister still keeps trying his best to unite them.

Meanwhile, the MEP has convened a meeting of its Central Committee today at its headquarters in Maharagama to take a formal stand on the Presidential Election. The MEP is likely to decide in favour of the President. The Prime Minister is also expected to play a key role in the President’s election campaign.

The MEP is a long-standing ally of the SLPP. Mr. Gunawardena even led the Joint Opposition during the time of the Yahalapana government as the forerunner to the formation of SLPP ahead of the local authorities’ election in 2018.

The other SLPP allies such as the National Congress and Tamil Makkal Viduthalai Pulihal (TMVP) have already pledged support to the President.

‘Ranil free to align with SJB & Tamil-Muslim parties’

The ruling Sri Lanka Podujana Peramuna’s (SLPP) National Organiser Government Parliamentarian Namal Rajapaksa said that now that the Rajapaksas (a reference to the family of former Presidents Mahinda Rajapaksa and Gotabaya Rajapaksa) are no longer aligned with President and independent Presidential candidate Ranil Wickremesinghe, the latter would be able to secure the support of Tamil and Muslim community-based political parties.

Speaking to the media yesterday (31 July), he said that there were previous allegations that certain MPs representing the main Parliamentary Opposition Party, the Samagi Jana Balawegaya (SJB), and Tamil and Muslim community-based political parties were not supporting Wickremesinghe as the Rajapaksas were with him.

“The President can now approach the SJB and Tamil and Muslim community based political parties and seek their support. The allegation was that they were not willing to support him as he was with those who engage in politics based on the Sinhala-Buddhist ideology, but now, they are free to support him.”

When queried as to whether the SLPP would initiate disciplinary action against their MPs who have extended their support to Wickremesinghe in the Presidential Election, Namal Rajapaksa said that they would focus on going ahead with their election campaign more than on disciplinary action.

“Let’s see about it in the future. They (SLPP MPs supporting Wickremesinghe) are still discussing with Wickremesinghe and us. Some of them are having discussions with three or four parties.”

The Politburo of the SLPP which met at the official residence of SLPP Leader and Government MP Mahinda Rajapaksa in Colombo early this week, decided to field a Presidential candidate of its own instead of supporting Wickremesinghe. The SLPP expressed that they would further look into qualified individuals to contest for the Presidential Election and that the person with the most likelihood to win would officially be named the SLPP’s Presidential candidate in the coming days. However, many of the SLPP members including Cabinet and State Ministers and MPs have already expressed their support to Wickremesinghe.

India Only Seeks Trust, Goodwill From Sri Lanka – Envoy

Trust and Goodwill are the factors that India seeks from Sri Lanka, instead of short term benefits and acquiring assets.

Indian Envoy Santosh Jha expressed these views in Colombo yesterday, attending the launch of two books authored by K.V. Ganesharajan.

India-Sri Lanka relations have reached unprecedented heights, according to Santosh Jha, the High Commissioner of India to Sri Lanka.

Speaking on the current state of bilateral ties, Jha emphasized the multifaceted nature of the relationship and the progress achieved since both nations gained independence from colonial rule.

“India-Sri Lanka relations have come a very long way and are probably at their best in history, at least since our independence from colonial rule,” Jha remarked.

He highlighted the broad scope of connectivity efforts being undertaken, which include energy, land, digital, and people-to-people connections. Jha stressed the importance of these connections as the foundation of the bilateral relationship.

“Over a five-year horizon, you will see billions and billions of dollars coming in over the next five to ten years through this relationship into Sri Lanka,” Jha projected, underscoring the significant economic impact of the strengthened ties.

Jha also called on the legal profession to play a proactive role in shaping public opinion and supporting the bilateral relationship.

“The legal profession, which also builds public opinion, needs to speak for it and drive it. If we remain silent, we will repeat the mistakes of the past and miss out on future opportunities,” he cautioned.

Malaiyaha Tamils be recognized as a separate community

Malaiyaha Tamils, who live mainly in the plantations, are to be recognized as a separate community.

Their representative Anthony Jesudasan said the director general of census and statistics has agreed to give them that recognition.

They will be called either Indian Tamils or Malaiyaha Tamils, said the convener of the civil society collective of the community.

He said two of their demands made during a march last year have now been met.

Another has been fulfilled via a court order that gives the community the right to postal addresses.

Mainly demanding citizenship rights, they marched from Thalaimannar to Matale, taking the same route their ancestors from India took 200 years ago to reach the hill-country, where they have since been working mainly as tea estate labourers.

To mark the first anniversary of that march, an event took place at a memorial at Urmanai in Talaimannar on 28 July.

They also demand the recognition of their history, struggle and economic contributions, and access to education, health and social security.

A reasonable payment for their work, workplace dignity, protection and equal salaries for men and women, land, livelihood and housing rights and the protection and promotion of their culture are also included.

Cooperation at multilateral and regional fora were also discussed.

The Sri Lanka delegation “thanked Pakistan for the steadfast support that it has been extending to Sri Lanka over the years at multilateral fora.”

The Pakistan delegation “commended the leadership and the people of Sri Lanka in stabilizing the debt crisis and stated that Pakistan could learn from Sri Lanka’s experience.”

Sri Lanka and Pakistan are both in the midst of International Monetary Fund bailout programmes.

“The delegations agreed on the need to increase connectivity and bilateral trade in enhancing economic growth, in particular air connectivity, between the two countries.

“Tourism and people-to-people contacts could be further enhanced through cultural, religious and sports links.

“The two sides also agreed to cooperate in meeting challenges of transnational organized crime such as drug trafficking which adversely impact both Sri Lanka and Pakistan.”

Ultimatum issued to Mahinda as 92 MPs assure RW support

A group of Sri Lanka Podujana Peramuna (SLPP) MPs have issued an ultimatum to party leader Mahinda Rajapaksa after 92 MPs met Ranil Wickremesinghe and assured him support at the election in September.

The SLPP MPs demanded that Rajapaksa make a u-turn on the decision not to support Ranil Wickremesinghe at the Presidential election or face the consequences, Colombo Gazette learns.

Ninety-two MPs, mostly representing the SLPP and the Sri Lanka Freedom Party (SLFP) met the President in the presence of Prime Minister Dinesh Gunawardena and guaranteed their support to him at the election in September.

The SLPP MPs have warned Rajapaksa that if the party continues to stick with the decision taken on Monday they will be forced to reconsider their support to the party at the next Parliament election.

The group of SLPP MPs have also warned that failing to support Wickremesinghe could lead to the eventual death of the SLPP.

SLPP General Secretary Sagara Kariyawasam had told reporters, Monday, that the SLPP decided, by majority, to nominate its own candidate at the election in September.

However, SLPP MP and Cabinet Minister Kanchana Wijesekera said that the SLPP politburo which met on Monday did not constitute the majority of the SLPP.

He said that a majority of the MPs represented in Parliament met the President, Tuesday, and assured him their support.

The Minister said that while most SLPP MPs want to back the incumbent President there are a handful who are against it.
