Cardinal once again calls for Justice on Easter Attacks

His Eminence Malcolm Cardinal Ranjith, the Archbishop of Colombo has once again called for justice over the Easter attacks, during Christmas Mass held on Friday (24).

During the service held at the Basilica of Our Lady of Lanka in Ragama, His Eminence noted that 260 people were killed in the Easter attacks, and questioned the purpose of taking away their lives.

“What did they lose their lives for? Was it because of conflicts between religions? Religions are not meant to kill people. In fact, religions exist to keep people alive. If a religion kills people, that religion is useless,” he stated.

He said the main reason as to why the true perpetrators responsible for the heinous 2019 April Attacks are not be exposed, is because selfishness reigns supreme among the masses, and therefore it is paramount for a social transformation.

His Eminence Malcolm Cardinal Ranjith, the Archbishop of Colombo says that a change of attitude is needed in the country.

Moreover, His Eminence Malcolm Cardinal Ranjith also said that it is the duty of all, including the citizens and politicians, to put the spiritual principles we believe in first.

EC Chief says not informed of LG polls postponement

Election Commission Chairman Nimal Punchihewa, yesterday (24) said that in spite of recent media reports as regards the controversial government decision to put off scheduled Local Government polls, the EC hadn’t been informed so far.

Attorney-at-law Punchihewa said so in response to The Island query whether the EC had suspended ongoing preparations for LG polls scheduled to be conducted before 20 March, 2022.

The EC requires about four months to prepare for LG polls, the Elections Chief said, adding that he recently briefed the Special Parliamentary Select Committee (PSC) on Electoral Reforms chaired by Chief Government

Whip Dinesh Gunawardena, MP, regarding their preparations for the forthcoming polls.

The EC consists of Nimal G. Punchihewa, S.B. Divaratne, M.M. Mohamad, K.P.P. Pathirana and Ms. P.S.M. Charles.

The EC Chairman acknowledged that he perused statements issued by Provincial Council and Local Government State Minister Roshan Ranasinghe regarding the polls postponement. However, the relevant State Ministry or the cabinet of ministers hadn’t so far informed the EC of its decision.

Last Local Government polls were conducted on Feb 10, 2018. The Sri Lanka Podujana Peramuna bagged the vast majority of 341 Local Government bodies at that election. Local Government polls are held every four years.

SLPP General Secretary Sagara Kariyawasam, MP, yesterday told The Island that the relevant cabinet paper had been submitted to the cabinet of ministers. Once approved, the EC would be informed, Attorney-at-Law Kariyawasam said.

Punchihewa said that the government enjoyed the constitutional power to put off Local Government polls up to one year. Responding to another query, the former member of the Sri Lanka Human Rights Commission said that the law permitted the government to postpone Local Government elections.

State Minister Ranasinghe is on record as having said that the growing threat posed by new Covid-19 variant omicron compelled the government to postpone scheduled elections.

Polls monitoring body PAFFREL said that whatever the reasons attributed to the polls postponement it was clear political reasons prompted the government decision. Executive Director, PAFFREL, Rohana Hettiarachchi said that previous administrations, including yahapalana resorted to postponement of elections. Hettiarachchi strongly advised against putting off elections as the country celebrated 90 years of franchise. Such strategies were nothing but an affront to the voting public, Hettiarachchi said, drawing the attention of the government to the importance of knowing public reaction to its policies. The failure to do so would be catastrophic, Hettiarachchi said, recalling how previous postponement of elections destabilized the country.

Hettiarachchi urged the government to face the scheduled elections or face the consequences.

The prominent civil society activist said that postponement of elections at any level would never give an advantage to the party in power.

Political sources said that the SLPP proposal to put off polls hadn’t been discussed among constituent members of the ruling coalition. Sources said that over two years after the last presidential election in Nov 2019 the coalition was yet to set up a mechanism to discuss policy matters and the ongoing dispute between the SLPP and a section of the constituents further deteriorated the situation.

Former Communist Party General Secretary Dew Gunasekera said that the move to put off Local Government polls should be examined against the backdrop of a spate of contentious issues ranging from fertilizer fiasco to Yugadanavi deal. The ex-minister said that the situation was extremely critical particularly due to the unprecedented crisis in debt servicing. The political environment underwent total transformation over the past 18 months, the veteran politician said, asserting that some might have felt election at any level would be disadvantageous to the ruling party.

Chinese company says would complain to international rating agencies

While asserting that its product was cleared of harmful bacteria including Erwinia, the Chinese company that is involved in the fertilizer dispute with Sri Lanka said it would complain to the international rating agencies against Sri Lankan state banks over the default of payment, a spokesman said.

The spokesman said the ship carrying 20,000 tons of organic fertilizer manufactured by Seawin Biotech does not contain harmful bacteria, according to the latest test report in Singapore.

The company says the company ‘Seawin Biotech’ is preparing to complain to the top three international credit rating agencies -Standards & Poor’s rating, Moody’s Investors Service and Fitch rating against the state banks of Sri Lanka.

“We will share the relevant evidence of the case with these three institutions to remind other international investors of the relevant risks,” she said.

JVP dismisses any possibility of aligning with SLFP

Amids claims of some Sri Lanka Freedom Party (SLPP) politicians of a possible aligning with the Janatha Vimukthi Peramuna (JVP) in a future election, the JVP today dismissed any such possibility claiming that they were not ready to align with the two main parties or anyone who had been part of them.

JVP General Secretary Tilvin Silva told media that the JVP was not ready to join hands with those who contributed to the debacle the country was put into by being in the two main parties while enjoying ministry portfolios.

“Some members in the government are finding ways to get away when the government is in trouble. We will not allow those who abandon the sinking ship. The JVP has no connection with those who were in the two main parties and contributed to the destruction of the country,” he said.

When asked that some politicians were claiming that they were fraud and corruption-free, he said they should show it in practice rather than in words.

Mr. Silva said they were inviting the provincial level members of the main parties to join hands with the JVP and people who really want to change this failed political system.

While taking part in a protest organised by the JVP in Maharagama against the rising cost of living and fuel prices, he said the government should reduce fuel prices without further burdening the people.

“People who are finding it difficult to make ends meet were further burdened due to the increase in the fuel prices. The government should clarify as to why the fuel prices were increased when the fuel prices are on the decline in the global market?” he questioned.

Sialkot factory hires another Sri Lankan for Priyantha Kumara’s position

Special Representative to Pakistani Prime Minister on Religious Harmony and Middle East Hafiz Muhammad Tahir Mehmood Ashrafi and renowned religious scholar Maulana Tariq Jamil on Wednesday met Sri Lankan High Commissioner Mohan Wijewickrama at the Sri Lankan Embassy in Islamabad.

They have expressed grief at the lynching of Sri Lankan national Priyantha Kumara by a charged mob in Sialkot earlier this month.

Kumara, a senior manager at a factory in Sialkot, was tortured to death on December 3 by hundreds of protesters, including the factory employees, and his body was later burnt.

Talking to the media after the meeting, Ashrafi, while condemning the Sialkot incident, said that the factory’s management has decided to bear all the expenses of the two children of Kumara, besides giving the position of senior manager to a Sri Lankan citizen in the factory.

Maulana Tariq Jamil apologised for the incident and said that Islam does not allow such barbarity. The religion does not allow oppression at all.

Jamil said that Islam’s literal meaning refers to submission, surrender and peaceful reconciliation, especially compliance with divine directives.

The whole Pakistani nation is ashamed for that barbarity. No one has the right to burn anyone, he added.

Speaking on the occasion the Sri Lankan high commissioner thanked both dignitaries for visiting the embassy and said that the Sri Lankan government is fully satisfied with the steps taken by the Pakistani government.

Earlier on December 7, clerics from various schools of thought had visited the Sri Lankan Embassy in Islamabad and unanimously condemned the lynching of Kumara, calling it “un-Islamic” and extrajudicial”. They had demanded that strict legal action be meted out to those responsible.

Issuance of ordinary tickets will be suspended after midnight

The Railway Station Masters Association has announced that the issuance of ordinary tickets will be suspended after midnight today.

Speaking to media in Colombo today, Chairman of the Association, Sumedha Somaratne said only reservations for intercity express trains will be made from midnight today.

Somaratne said no positive response was received during the discussion held with the General Manager of Sri Lanka Railways yesterday to inform of the current issues faced by the Station Masters and several other matters.

He said the State Minister of Transport issued directives to the Railways General Manager to take immediate steps to resolve their issues during a discussion held two days ago.

He said however the General Manager did not provide alternative solutions to provide facilities to passengers or to resolve errors in the signalling systems.

Somaratne said they proposed adding trains to facilitate the large number of passengers expected to head home for Christmas over the weekend.

He said the Railway service hasn’t returned to normalcy even though the country has returned to normalcy.

He said they cannot risk the lives of the public by only adding two special trains.

Somaratne said they cannot issue ordinary tickets to the public without adequate space.

He said they will not issue tickets until a solution is provided.

Meanwhile, Station Masters reached a decision to refrain from accepting and transporting parcels from midnight yesterday, in protest of the arbitrary actions of the railway administration.

All station masters are planning to launch an indefinite strike at midnight on the 26th of December unless a proper solution is provided.
