The National Election Commission has decided to increase the security deposit charged from candidates for all elections.
The decision was reached to discourage a large number of candidates from submitting nominations, Chairman of the Election Commission, L.M.A.R Ratnayake says.
The increase in security deposit could potentially lead to a reduction in election expenses, He adds.
The proposal has been forwarded to the Attorney General’s Department and the Parliament for approval.
